Learning methods: Seminar 30h, 30h Project work

Learning outcome, core skills: Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a philosophy that seeks to balance human and economic well-being with cultural values and stewardship of the environment. ESD employs transdisciplinary educational methods and approaches to foster a lifelong learning morality, promotes respect for human interests that are compatible with the sustainable use of natural resources and the conditions of the planet, and fosters a sense of cooperation and global solidarity (UNESCO Decade of ESD for 2030).

The module aims to build an in-depth understanding and practical application of ESD by gaining the following:

  • Insights and knowledge on case studies about the ESD landscape, ESD in practice and 'in situ' in different realities
  • Ability to reflect on the relationship between ESD as goals, strategies, and practices
  • Perspective to manage and evaluate sustainable change for individual and collective well-being
  • Understanding of the ‘lifelong learning’ framework and 'Sustainability in Practice' initiatives
  • Knowledge to recognize and learn critical, innovative competencies for sustainability and how to develop practical employability skills and consultancy experience under ESD criteria
  • Know-how to build a culture of sustainability and develop a sustainable business model
  • Outlook and practical experience to integrate sustainability in research methods, project design and impact assessment
  • Expertise to identify opportunities to support and develop a progressive and resilient culture that encourages communities, professions, and institutions to put learning into practice
