The seminar begins by taking a close look at the theatrical conditions in Shakespeare's own time, proceeds with a thorough analysis of Hamlet and applies several critical approaches to this play in order to showcase the play's complexity. It also provides 'practical' perspectives, which includes a field trip to the Saarländisches Staatstheater (Saarbrücken) in order to watch a performance of Hamlet and to meet with the head dramaturge, get a VIP tour of the theatre and, most likely, meet up with a member of the cast (https://www.staatstheater.saarland/stuecke/schauspiel/detail/hamlet-stimmenreich) (date to be announced). We will also take a look at portrayals Hamlet in different media, including film productions. Another focal point will be Hamlet and theory, specifically the question of how different critical approaches deal with the play.

You can only participate if you a) are motivated, b) have finished reading Hamlet before the start of the term and c) are willing to watch films at home.
