- Fundamentals of periodic structures in optics

- Special topics in thin-film optics

- 2D and 3D Photonic Crystals and their application, e.g. waveguides, filters, fibers, Fano resonances, surface states

- Optics with metallic nanostructures and their application. Plasmonics, surface states, localized states, applications

- Properties of optical materials, origin of the refractive index, Kramers-Kronig relations, non-linear optics.

- Effective index methods, Clausisus-Mosotti theory, models, applications.

- Left-handed materials, metamaterials und metasurfaces

- Opto-mechanics, optical tweezers, cavity opto-mechanics, ponderomotive force.
