At the Universität Kassel, you can combine volunteering for a good cause and earning study credits by participating in a key competencies-oriented Service Learning-seminar, the so-called „SchlüsSL-Seminar”. Since 2020, it is also offered as a intercultural version that is taught in English and German and open for international students (www.uni-kassel.de/go/schluessl-EN).

Gutes Tun und Credits sammeln! Combine volunteering with earning study credits!

The SchlüsSL-Interkulturell-seminar: SchlüsSL is the German abbrevitation for "Schlüsselkompetenzorientiertes Service Learning", or key competencies-oriented Service Learning. The seminar is open to students from all departments, with up to 6 ECTS for additive key competencies. The course languages are English and German.

Seminar topics: Project management, stakeholdermanalysis, participatory methods, time management, communication and conflict management, team competence, intercultural competence

In the accompanying seminar, participants can share their practical experiences and get feedback, theoretical knowledge and inputs to strengthen their key competencies.

Your volunteering project: Plan a clearly defined project or campaign in cooperation with a non-profit organisation or public institution, either on your own or as part of a team. You have 60 hours during the semester for planning and implementing your project. The University of Kassel has existing cooperations with non-profit and public institutions in Kassel, which submit proposals for possible projects before the start of the semester. However, you can also submit your own project idea, e.g. if you are already volunteering at a non-profit organisation or initiative. To clarify whether your project idea is suitable for the seminar, contact katharina.leinius@uni-kassel.de before the kick-off seminar session.

At the first seminar session, we will present a selection of possible projects that have been brought to the university's attention by non-profit organisations and public institutions in Kassel. We recommend choosing from these suggestions, because this is where your help is really needed and initial preliminary arrangements have already been made.

6 ECTS for additive key competencies:

    • Attending the 7 seminar sessions + 1 project coaching session
    • Planning and implementing your volunteering project (60 hours)
    • Presenting your project at the final session (in English or German)
    • Writing a projct report (in English or German)
