The Logic of Pipelines

Pipeline

1 : a line of pipe with pumps, valves, and control devices for conveying liquids, gases, or finely divided solids

2 : a direct channel for information 3 : a process or channel of supply

4 : a state of development, preparation, or production also : the system for such processes, e.g. a strong product pipeline

In an era that is increasingly defined by global supply chains and international standards, what can the study of pipelines teach us about new building materials, experimental design practices, as well as our routine exposure to toxic air, land, and water? How do pipelines work to reduce contamination or obscure threats to human and more-than-human bodies? This course introduces students to new concepts, methods, and debates about "toxic modernity" in architectural history and theory. Students will develop critical reading and writing skills as they engage with case studies in Germany, Europe, and the wider world.
