The seminar introduces foundational notions of sustainability science through collaborative debate and critical thinking. The seminar will look into the origins of sustainability science. What is sustainability science and why is it needed? We will learn how to differentiate between two branches of sustainability science: descriptive-analytical and transformative. The seminar will highlight the different types of knowledge and modes of knowledge production within sustainability science, with an emphasis on transdisciplinary sustainability science. Together we will problematize the different aspects of knowledge democratization in order to uncover an ethics of transdisciplinary sustainability science.  We will develop the contribution that the humanities and arts can make to sustainability science.
