In this seminar, we will investigate quotational constructions from a semantic point of view. We will start with a closer look at the fundamentals of quotation by discussion varieties of quotation, theories of quotation, and the use-mention distinction. We will explore the meaning of quotation and reflect upon different readings – such as irony – that arise through quotation marks. After a short introduction to the theory, recent developments in the field will be addressed by examining literature on quotation.
