In this seminar, we will analyze and compare the national, regional and international governance levels and the upholding, safekeeping, and responsiveness with regards to the rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Inter, and Queer (LGBTIQ+) persons. We will discuss the negotiations of rights of LGBTIQ+ persons within the human rights architecture on these governance levels. The organizations of interest are the African Union, East African Community, and Southern African Development Community as well as the United Nations. We will analyze their institutional structures, implemented measures, and norms. We will also take a closer look at the interconnections of key stakeholders, like NGOs, think tanks, lawyers associations etc. at the national, regional, and international level.

During the first seminar session – online – on the 08th November 2022, I will introduce you to the outline of the seminar. Thereafter we have three block sessions in person (9./10. December 2022 and 03. February 2023) during these sessions we will discuss the topic of the seminar along relevant literatures; and you will also get input on how to write a paper and present your paper within a conference setting. You will then be expected to write a short paper until the 20th of January 2023, which you will present during our mock conference. During the session on the 4th of February 2023 we will hold a mock conference with panels according to the topics you choose. During this mock conference you will present your paper (10 min.) and receive the feedback from your peer reviewer and me. There will also be room for discussions.
