In this seminar the different cultural and artistic movements and cultural political key
moments during the early years of the Russian Revolution (1917 - 1924) will be presented
and discussed in terms of their specific understanding of the role of art in processes of social
transformation. The readings include primary sources from (cultural) political actors, theorists
and artists at the time, as well as broader historical introductions to the different cultural
programmes and experiments. We will also look at contemporary reflections on what
aspects from these discussions can be reframed from a current perspective and how central
aesthetic-political questions at the time have remained central in art discourse for the past
100 years.
Discussions in the seminar can take place in English or German as needed, and much of the
reading material itself is in English.
In diesem Seminar werden die verschiedenen kulturellen und künstlerischen Bewegungen
und kulturpolitischen Schlüsselmomente in der frühen Periode der Russischen Revolution
(1917 - 1924) vorgestellt und im Hinblick auf ihr spezifisches Verständnis der Rolle der Kunst
in gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen diskutiert. Die Lektüre umfasst sowohl
Primärquellen von (kultur-)politischen Akteur*innen, Theoretiker*innen und Künstler*innen
der Zeit als auch breitere historische Einführungen in die verschiedenen kulturellen
Programme und Experimente. Wir werden uns auch mit zeitgenössischen Überlegungen
dazu befassen, welche Aspekte aus diesen Diskussionen aus heutiger Sicht neu betrachtet
werden können und wie zentrale ästhetisch-politische Fragen der Zeit in den letzten 100
Jahren im Kunstdiskurs eine zentrale Rolle gespielt haben.
Diskussionen im Seminar können je nach Bedarf auf Englisch oder Deutsch stattfinden, die
Seminarlektüre selbst ist zu großen Teilen in englischer Sprache.
