This new type of introductory seminar is obligatory for BA students according to the new ‘Prüfungsordnung’ of 2021. Ideally, the seminar ought to be attended after having completed the ‘Orientierungskurs’ in Literary Studies, but it is also possible to take it simultaneously with the OK.

The seminar is supposed to facilitate the transition from the OK to other seminars in literary studies and to introduce students to the composition of research papers in this area. We will revise a major literary genre from a specific thematic focus (this semester, it will be the representation of family in American drama). In addition, students will have to do short written interpretation exercises and also practical exercises (e.g. writing an introduction) that hone the skills needed to write a research paper.

Please note: This seminar type will be offered each semester and is primarily designed for BA students. If capacity allows, students in other courses of study may also register for this seminar. Please also note that it is possible to do a ‘Studienleistung’ or a ‘Prüfungsleistung’ (consisting of a research paper) in this seminar.

Students who wish to attend must have read Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof for the first session and be able to pass a short quiz on the text of this play.
