This is a course taught in
English and dealing with policies, programs and practical experience in the
area of welfare-to-work (activation schemes adressing people facing problems
with accessing vocational training or gainful employment) throughout typical
Western nation states. The course will introduce into relevant institutional
frameworks and organisational settings, to gain insights in both cross-national
commonalities and international differences in the sector under study. One
angle to adopt is the evolving role and character of social support / social
work in this special area. Participants will be offered a couple of lectures
and will have to read a small number of academic articles from the field. Speciall sessions will help students to come to grips with reading and understanding academic English. For some students, debates will take place in English among those already confident in
their language skills. Others will have the opportunity to discuss learning
results in German.
