Questions about the nature of mind can be said, with no hesitation, to
be at the core of the most important philosophical discussions of this
century. These questions concern what count as a constituent for
cognitive processes, how the mental and the physical domains are relate
to each other or how we interact and read other people´s mind. This
research seminar takes a fresh look at the most recent theoretical and
practical developments in philosophy of mind and cognitive science. We
will read recent publications related to which methods, concepts and
ideas are currently used to investigate the (concept of) mind. Our focus
is embedded in a special, newly emerged branch of cognitive science:
situated cognition research. The most part of the sessions will be
dedicated to discuss the latest philosophical research that pushes the
idea that cognitive processes should be considered as embodied,
embedded, extended and/or enacted. This seminar represents a great
occasion for the students interested in these topics since international
experts in philosophy of mind and cognition will join some of the
sessions. Therefore, students will have the occasion to ask questions
and discuss with the authors of some of the texts selected. On the other
hand, the authors will contextualize their publications and introduce
us into the details of their thoughts about how the mind works. Since
the debate about situated cognition is internationally-oriented, the
course will also be in English. However, a perfect knowledge of the
language is not required to register for the seminar! International and
non-philosophy students (psychology, neuroscience, linguistic, AI,
anthropology) are also welcome.
