The course aims to discuss with students a background from the social sciences, development and public policies. We will especially focus on the perspectives provided from Latin America and the Caribbean. In addition, it will be analyzed how public policies have been made  around development from a vision from the South. Using the case of Cuba, we will approach a particular experience: a developing country that has designed public policies at various levels with good results in areas such as education and public health. Topics such as security and social assistance, education, health, demographic indicators would  be discussed. All of them  addressed to their relationship with public policies.

The seminar would encourage the  engagement with students in a contextualized critical discussion of public policy experiences and their impact on development. We will discuss the case of Cuba and analyze other examples in some  countries selected by the students themselves.

Target groups: MA students interested in a critical analyzes on public policies and their relationship with development in the Latin American and Caribbean region, focused on Cuba.
