In this seminar, the fictional representation and problematisation of climate change, gender and work will be in the foreground of our discussions and analyses. In particular, we will look at very different novels and films, such as:

Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid's Tale (foregrounding the topics of gender equality, pollution, governance); Karen Thompson Walker’s The Age of Miracles (a coming of age novel dealing with climate change, good health and well being); James Ponsondt’s The Circle (a film focusing on decent work, society, and the digital turn); Christina Dalcher’s Vox (illustrating the consequences which arise from muting and suppressing one half of the population), and Emily St John Mandel’s Station Eleven (which portrays the onset, development, and consequences of a pandemic).
