What role does Labour play in development theories’ explanations of the
globally unjust ecological crises? This seminar takes us through
different perspectives, including Ecological Modernization Theory, Post
Development, Unequal Environmental Exchange, World-Ecology and
Ecological Marxism to sketch the ideas and gaps in theoretical
discussions on the relation between Labour and Nature in the process of
development. Drawing on Environmental Labour Studies, Marxist Ecology
and Labour-led Development theory, the seminar examines why the labour
process is crucial for an understanding of ecological crisis and why the
labour movement could offer a different development path towards the
social-ecological transformation of society.
