In this seminar students will develop a comprehensive understanding of
English syntax. Taking a universalist perspective, the course explores
English from three distinct angles: theoretical analysis, historical
evolution, and comparative study. We delve into various syntactic
categories and operations, examining their characteristics through a
generative lens. This will help us understand how different elements of
language structure relate to one another, revealing patterns and
regularities in the interface between syntax and semantics. Throughout
the course, students will regularly complete short reading assignments,
participate in small group work projects, and facilitate group
discussions. A reader and a Moodle site will be provided. Exams can be
taken in accordance with the official exam regulations, which may
include options such as written in-class exams or term papers.
